After opening up Sun Belt Conference play with a 1-2 series loss against Western Kentucky last week, the Ragin’ Cajun softball team had a good weekend, beating McNeese State 10-0 mercy-rule victory Saturday, March 28.

On the pitching mound, Donna Bourgeois collected her 13th victory of the season as she tossed a complete-game shutout. She allowed only three hits and only one walk, and fanned 10 batters in the game.

Offensively, the Cajuns collected 11 hits on the afternoon, including three extra base hits. Lana Bowers included a pair of extra-base hits. Bowers hit her second home run of the season in the Cajuns' five-run third inning and collected her seventh double of the year as well.

Karli Hubbard and Erikka Murphy each added a pair of hits, while Christi Orgeron added a double. Bowers led the team with three RBI, and Cody Runyan followed with two runs batted in.

The Cajuns were scoreless until the third inning, but broke the scoreless scoreboard when they completed five runs. Vallie Gaspard led off the inning when she reached base on an error. Murphy followed with a single to the left field. The two advanced on a wild pitch and Gaspard came around to score as Katie Smith reached on an error.

Hubbard singled to left-center to score Murphy from third.

With runners on the corners, Bowers stepped up to the plate, and hit her second home run of the season, clearing the bases and giving the Cajuns a 5-0 advantage after two and a half innings of play.

In the top of the fourth inning, the Cajuns added an insurance run. Orgeron led off the fourth inning with a double to the left center field. Because of a two-base throwing error by McNeese, Orgeron was able to come around to score.

During the bottom of the fourth, McNeese ended Bougeois’ no-hitter with a single through the right side. The batter advanced to second on a wild pitch, but was not allowed to go further as Bourgeois fanned the next three batters to end the inning.

In the top of the sixth, the Cajuns scored four runs on four hits to compete the run-rule victory.

McNeese loaded up the bases in the bottom of the sixth due to an error and a pair of base hits. Bourgeois did not allow any of the runners to score by fanning the final batter of the game to preserve the shutout.

The Cajuns resumed Sun Belt Conference play as they faced Middle Tennessee Tuesday in a doubleheader at Alfred and Helen Lamson Park. Due to publication, The Vermilion was not able to deliver the results.

The third game of the three-game series will be played this afternoon, Wednesday, April 1 at 1 p.m.

The Cajuns will also host FIU in a three-game series this weekend. The first pitch for the doubleheader is slated for 3 p.m. Saturday, April 4. The third game will follow Sunday with the first pitch at 1 p.m.
